early Christmas

We had a wonderful day with MeeMee yesterday!  I cooked a Christmas lunch and we sat around and gabbed and she opened her presents.  Very gezellig (Dutch word meaning approximately “warm and cozy”).

New furnace

New furnace

Merry Christmas! Thanks honey, I always wanted a furnace for Christmas!! 95s Bryant with special electrostatic filter. It also has a DC motor with a special Low speed (3 speeds) so that it can run 24/7 and help keep the hot/cold spots in an old house like ours more evened out.

Amusingly enough, I just went with the top rated local company on Angie’s List. A work buddy lost his furnace Sunday (the cold snap has been killer for furnaces) and got 5 quotes on a replacement and ended up going with this same company anyway (we didn’t find out until today when we were both home from work due to having furnaces installed).

Update from the House of Job

As in the biblical Job.  It is a frosty morning here in our 60 degree house as the furnace gets completely replaced downstairs.  But 60 degrees isn’t bad considering last night it was -7F outside and today it is a balmy 2F.  And of course the air conditioner was old too and wouldn’t you know it, it has been leaking down into the furnace and so they don’t recommend putting it back in above the furnace … meaning we need a new air conditioner before summer as well.

Janet, while we were at it, we threw in a super fancy electrostatic, charcoal blah blah flugensnafel blerglesnorf furnace filter … just for you.

Anyway that’s oh-so-happy thing number one.  Then of course there’s Morticia.  She had a bad spell post-surgery with low calcium which is a very quick killer.  She went in, got on an IV, and they wanted us to do 24 hour IV care at an emergency vet and we had to cut it off and say no, that’s too expensive.  Instead we took her home and fed her oral calcium — yes those huge pills — dissolved in water.  She loved that … not.  So she’s now on Vitamin D and calcium daily and seems to be rebounding well.  If all goes well her body should take over on its own with the calcium, but it’s a tricky business with the remaining parathyroid glands and possible damage and seeing if they will re-vascularize and blah blah blah.

There’s more but really it all pales in comparison.

On the PLUS side, Max had a fantastic piano recital last night with all of Max’s students!  It went really well, and fortuitously was the first one ever scheduled at a public location rather than at our house, which was handy since it was a bit frosty at home.

As well, after Thanksgiving I started my new job as an Oracle DBA (Database Administrator) and I am enjoying it and learning a lot.  My new boss is a good guy and the whole team is happy with who we hired.  It was one of those rare occurrences where the team agreed with management about who to hire, so at least there’s no drama.

Other news … MeeMee has decided not to join us for Christmas due to the long drive.  Instead she’ll be spending Christmas with our good friends Wendy and Julian who are also hosts in the Host Home program, and some of her friends as well.

Morty’s doing well!

She had surgery yesterday morning and came home this morning and is quite chipper, considering.  She now has just a tiny piece of thyroid left, and should be able to live a few more years as long as her kidneys stay normal.

Morty is sick

This is the ‘heatlamp’ sickbed I made for Morty behind my computer monitor; she loves the Bluesbuster full spectrum bulb in my desklamp. She has lost so much weight (she is only 5.4 lbs now) that she is attracted to any heat source.

We’re a little Anneke-crazy around here …

Anneke is on all of our various computer desktops (including the TV). (Max had a pic on Max’s laptop, too, but sadly it is currently suffering from a sneeze-induced chicken soup incident, awaiting a service call.)
